Respite Care Worker

Pay Range: $16.50/hr

Role and Responsibility of the position:  The respite care provider is primarily responsible for providing care and supervision, and companionship to children and adults with disabilities in the client’s own home. While doing so, if needed, the Respite Care Provider also cares for non-disabled siblings of the client.

Employee Classification:  All Respite Care Providers are classified as on-call, non-exempt.

Duties:  The Respite Care Provider’s duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Personal attendant, care-providing assistance as needed and as appropriate in activities of daily living such as dressing, toileting, changing diapers, feeding, bathing, etc. This may require lifting and transferring the client.
  • Meal preparation of the appropriate meal or snack, which occurs during the scheduled respite, as requested and provided by the client’s family.
  • Recreation-providing adaptive games and activities which offer a stimulating and enjoyable experience for the client (and siblings) during the respite.
  • Assist in providing medication to the client with written permission and instructions of parents or caregivers, during the respite session.
  • Confirm scheduled respite session beforehand with Respite Scheduler (receive Administration Number as confirmation) and confirm respite session with client’s family immediately upon agreeing to provide the service.
  • Complete “Timesheets,” (including signatures of parents or guardians), “Daily Documentation” and “Concern Forms” in a neat, clear, and accurate manner. Submit in a timely manner at the end of the pay period.
  • Attend required in-service and training meetings, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Hours:  The Respite Care Provider works “ON CALL”. Families request services and the Respite Care Provider chooses which bookings they prefer to work. The Provider is required to accept work for a minimum of 10 hours each calendar month.

Minimum Qualifications:  All respite providers must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Provide proof of identity and legal eligibility to work in the United States. 
  • At time of hire verification of a negative TB test and fingerprint clearance are required.
  •  At the time of hire provide proof of auto insurance and a DMV driving report yearly.
  • Be accessible, via phone to receive requests and communicate with the agency and client’s families as needed.
  • Be able to follow directions, guidelines and rules while working independently.
  •  Have good communication skills, both in verbal and written form.
  • Be able to exercise good judgment in handling emergencies or any other special problems or needs of the clients.
